There will be a run as portion of The City of Mobile, Alabama , that will be a ceremonial occasion of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The City of Mobile will have a Tunnel to Tower Run on Sept. 11 at
7:30 a.m. (time of the race is now different, please see times below at the end of the article) – Organizers said the 5K event will start at the Battleship Alabama Memorial Park and continue through the Bankhead Tunnel, finishing downtown near the RSA Tower which happens to be the tallest building in the State of Alabama.
Event organizers held a news conference Monday at Battleship Park, are planning to invite bicycle and motorcycle clubs to take part in the event and hope to include a one-mile fun run/walk through the tunnel as well. The one mile fun run/walk will begin at the tunnel and starts at 8:45 a.m.
Sunrise Service Planned
There are plans that also call for a special sunrise service at the Memorial Park preceding the Tunnel to Tower run which will include a U.S. Coast Guard flyover.
The City of Mobile race is similar to an event that was started in New York City where The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run began after the 9/11 attacks as a way to memorialize New York firefighter Stephen Siller and the other 342 brave firefighters who perished on that day. As the story goes, Siller had just gotten off work and ran from the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers in full firefighter gear. The New York run has grown every year to more than 25,000 participants from around the globe.
Other Events Scheduled For The 9/11 Weekend
Other events are scheduled on that weekend include a LoDa ArtWalk on Sept. 9, which is on Friday. Also on Sept. 11, the Museum of Mobile will have a Sunday exhibit called “Recovery: The World Trade Center Recovery Operation.” This exhibit sports rare artifacts from the World Trade Center found after the collapse of the buildings and a timeline that retraces events of that day in our American History. This display is orchestrated by the New York State Museum that is located in Albany, N.Y.
Boy Scout troops on this particular Sunday will exhibit the proper flag etiquette, including how to fold the American flag, etc. – They will be doing this twice. Once early in the day and also later in the day.
NOTE: After talking with a person at McCoy Outdoors in Mobile, I was told it is best to park on the West side of the Bay (the Mobile side) for the race. They supposedly will have shuttles to carry people to the start at the Battleship. Think about it, you would either have to run back another 5K or get someone to drive you back across. So it would be best to use the shuttles. I hope this helps.
Below is a map of the 5K run in case you are wondering the course of the race.
I am told the bikes start at 7:30 a.m. and the 5k run starts at 8:00 a.m. – It is confirmed after talking with the organizer of the race. Also to reiterate, the 1 mile starts at 8:45 at the tunnel. For other questions, please call Peggy Olive at 251-401-8039. I hope to see you there!
Here is the info I received via email about the race details. Some of this may be redundant or some of it may show some changes. All information is good information. Here is the email excerpt:
